The fight against terrorism has given the language technology a boost. Concept detection (when is an email considered to be a message about a potential attack), cross language and cultural references are clever cases. In the research area on the Semantic Web, one tries to understand what a given piece of content means. Enhancing the content with metadata is making it useful for further analysis, comparison or association. For example, a search query on hard-disks for evidence on financial fraud that would need a framework or thesaurus containing associative terms for financial terms, jargon and slang. Search technology could be of great help, both during indexing, applying this metadata, or during the query process.
